What it looks like

Kicking » Volleying

How?

Volleying is a tricky skill to master, but very useful too. It involves striking the ball whilst the ball is off the ground, either to make a pass or to take a shot on goal. What makes volleying hard is the fact that it’s moving, usually faster than it rolls, and it’s often spinning too, which makes accuracy harder than for a normal ground shot.

Why?

“As well as keeping up the pace of play, volleys can be used to seize control from the opposition. An intercepted pass can be turned to great advantage by a well-placed volley. Along with headers, volleys are a vital skill for players at the front of the field, being key to picking up crosses and delivering them into the goal. A particularly spectacular volley is the the scissor kick.”

Tips & drills

Keeping the ball down is one of the worst problems with volleying technique. As with all kicking skills watching the ball, and keeping the head down helps, but it is important to try to keep the knee over the ball. Practice makes perfect!
